Noticeable skin tightening is now well within reach with this non-invasive treatment, without surgery or lengthy downtime.

Ultraformer III is the latest non-surgical technology on our radar, offering both face and neck tightening and body contouring. We chat to Dr Chee Zhen Lim and her team at HD Cosmetic Clinic about this exciting new technology.

What is it?

Ultraformer III is a new system that uses ultrasound technology to lift and tighten skin without the complications and downtime associated with surgery.

“Ultraformer III is currently the most advanced MMFU Micro and Macro-Focused Ultrasound (MMFU) system available in Australia,” says Dr Lim.

“Our practice is based on scientific research, addressing specific causes of facial ageing. MMFU technology is safe for all skin types and targets the deepest layer of facial ageing to stimulate collagen and repair sun damage. Ultraformer III complements our other treatments – ranging from cosmetic injectables, to dermal therapies such as peels, microneedling and collagen stimulating serums.”

Ultraformer III, distributed by Cryomed, uses high intensity focused ultrasound to heat tissues at specific depths.

“At the depth of 4.5 mm the older collagen gets heated and fibroblasts or stem cells from the surrounding tissues get activated to produce new collagen,” says Dr Lim.

“At more superficial levels (1.5 – 3.0mm), there is the added advantage of brightening and improving skin texture due to the re-organisation of collagen fibres, as well as stimulating general repair mechanisms.”

In clinical trials, patients reported a high degree of satisfaction in lower face and neck tightening without being too uncomfortable or experiencing prolonged discomfort post treatment.

Who is a good candidate for Ultraformer III?

The best candidates will have loose, wrinkled skin around the eyelids or lids, mouth, nasolabial folds (between the nose and mouth) or sagging skin on the jawline or neck.

“Good candidates have some visible sag, but do not have a thick layer of fat or excessive loose skin in the target area. When used on the right patient, Ultraformer III can provide significant skin tightening and refinement,” says Dr Lim.

“Most commonly the lower face and neck are treated, but the Ultraformer III can also be used for body sculpting and skin tightening in areas such as the flanks, abdomen, thighs and knees. Stretch marks can also be significantly reduced.”

What to expect

A typical treatment takes between 45 minutes to an hour and most patients find it very tolerable. There is minimal downtime involved (if any) and patients can return to work or usual activities straightaway.

Results can occur immediately and will gradually improve up to 90 days post treatment. These results can be maintained for several months to a year afterwards.

“Most individuals will start noticing an immediate lift from a temporary contraction of the collagen fibres, which resolves in a few days as they stretch out again after being heated.

Actual results start being noticeable from 1 month onwards, with some people requiring a top up treatment at 3 months to complete the loading dose. Results can continue to build for 6-9 months before it peaks. In general there is only mild tenderness, redness and very mild swelling if any, so effectively there is no downtime.”

“When used as a preventive treatment, Ultraformer III slows down the loss of collagen in the skin (we lose 1-2% every year from about age 25) and can potentially negate the need for a surgical facelift,” concludes Dr Lim.
