Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is changing the future of aesthetic medicine. It harnesses the body’s own resources and natural healing mechanisms to achieve a regenerative and rejuvenating response in the skin. With a long history of use in sports medicine, PRP is now taking over the cosmetic arena.

PRP stimulates collagen production in the skin and fuels the treatment area with stem cells and growth factors. This helps enhance skin tone, strengthen dermal integrity and boost skin health on the face and body.

Companies such as Regen Lab are trail blazing the use of PRP in cosmetic therapy, supplying cosmetic surgeons and practitioners with devices needed to conduct the procedure and optimise the results following treatment.

‘The Regen Lab PRP system is a well-established system backed by a strong network of research from plastic and cosmetic doctors around the world,’ says Dr Robin Chok. ‘I have been using Regen PRP since 2012, with excellent results to the face initially. It was actually my patients, after experiencing great results in facial rejuvenation, who pushed me to develop a program for the neck and body.’

The procedure involves extracting a sample of the patient’s blood, centrifuging this sample to concentrate the blood’s platelets and reinjecting the concentrated solution into the treatment area. According to Dr Abbas Al-Taiff in Sydney, Regen PRP can achieve effective rejuvenation in a number of problem areas.

‘The Regen PRP system gives a clear and good concentration of platelets that is necessary for the appropriate treatment,’ he says. ‘I have achieved excellent results treating patients with infra orbital laxity around the eyes, lack of skin elasticity in the hands and abdominal stretch marks.’

Treatment possibilities

With seemingly endless applications, Regen PRP signifies a potential solution to improving the neck and décolletage area, which is traditionally difficult to treat.

‘A large number of my patients seeking neck and décolletage treatments are in their 50s and 60s,’ Dr Chok says. ‘The results from Regen Lab PRP are almost immediate, with vectored lift and enhanced tissue density. The colour of their skin also becomes more radiant. my patients’ enthusiasm over the results of PRP, and indeed the great results I’ve been seeing, is a major driving force for me to continue using PRP in face and body treatment.’

Similarly, the appearance of stretch marks, which are frustratingly impervious to creams, oils and lifestyle interventions, can be somewhat improved using Regen PRP.

‘It is best if stretch marks and loose skin from pregnancy are treated within the first two months post- childbirth to achieve the best results,’ says Dr Chok. ‘Collagen scar tissue causes the stretch marks to become white. once this happens, lasers or radiofrequency treatment may be required, otherwise results will be limited.’

With seemingly endless applications, Regen PRP can be used to treat a number of concerns, in patients of all ages.

‘Age does not seem to be a limiting factor for PRP treatment when the conditions are favourable,’ says Dr Chok. ‘The best results are often seen in patients who are not stressed and who don’t’ smoke. Stress seems to create a negative response where the body is not in harmony and all the systems – hormones, nerves and the repair homeostasis system – are out of sync.’

The PRP process

As with any medical treatment, a consultation process is required to achieve the best results. Dr Al-Taiff typically recommends a series of PRP treatments, depending on the individual patient.

‘I ask the patient to describe his or her main concern and I take photographs of the area to be treated,’ Dr Al-Taiff explains. ‘I discuss my analysis with the patient and explain the benefits of PRP therapy. I believe all patients are suitable for PRP treatment, provided they have no contradictions. usually a minimum of three sessions of PRP, performed four weeks apart, is required.’

Typically, results take four to six weeks to appear following PRP treatment, and continue to improve in the three months following treatment. A repeat PRP session is usually recommended at the eight-week mark, to generate the ‘boost’ effect. This phenomenon occurs when the cells – which are already activated from the first treatment – are ‘re-boosted’ by repeat treatment, augmenting the final result.

Dr Chok commonly recommends combining Regen PRP treatment with other modalities to achieve a more effective rejuvenation.

‘A repeat PRP treatment should be performed within eight weeks, to avoid missing the boost effect required to provide better skin density,’ he explains. ‘In between these, I would encourage an enhancement of the cellular process by treating the area with radiofrequency or ultrasound modalities, especially on the abdomen or neck.’

A treatment with seemingly endless areas for application, Regen PRP calls upon the body’s natural processes to rejuvenate the skin. from improving skin laxity and tone in the face, neck and décolletage to reducing the appearance of stretch marks on the abdomen or thighs, Regen PRP is a viable option in retuning youthfulness to the face and body.
