Tried every fad diet and exercise but still struggling to get that tummy taut or lose those love handles? The good news is that unwanted fat can now be targeted without surgery or the dreaded downtime. Advancements in the field of body contouring now offer non-surgical procedures that can achieve noticeable results with no downtime, no surgery and minimal (if any) discomfort.

The latest non-surgical body contouring procedure on our radar is CLATUU. We chat to Dr Steve Merten and his team at Pure Aesthetics about this exciting new technology.

What is it?

CLATUU is a new non-surgical body sculpting technology that uses controlled cooling to ‘freeze’ and permanently destroy fat from stubborn areas such as the abdomen and thighs. Treatment can be customised based on your unique needs.

“CLATUU is our treatment of choice for non-surgical body contouring, as it offers patients an alternative to surgical fat reduction. CLATUU is an effective procedure to eliminate stubborn fat that will not go away with diet and exercise, whilst also being ideal for contouring,” says Dr Merten.

CLATUU is based on cryolipolysis, which uses almost-freezing temperatures to kill fat cells without traumatizing the surrounding tissues or harming the skin.

“Fat cells respond to temperature differently than other cells of the body, allowing them to be destroyed by concentrated cooling that does not affect the rest of the body’s tissue. The damaged fat cells are collected and eliminated by the body’s natural processes, leaving a smoother, sleeker body contour in the treatment area,” explains Dr Merten.

In both clinical and pre-clinical trials, CLATUU, distributed in Australia by Cryomed, has demonstrated its efficiency in eliminating fat. It works by gently drawing fatty areas into the 360 degree applicators and cooling the area to a temperature that causes fat cells to die, without affecting the other surrounding tissue.

Are you a good candidate for CLATUU?

To be a good candidate, you should be at or near your ideal body weight, eat well and exercise regularly but still have stubborn fat that doesn’t respond to a healthy lifestyle.

“The main areas suitable for treatment are hips, flanks, midsection, thighs and back. The CLATUU has two handsets and this allows for dual areas of treatment in the same amount of time,” says Dr Merten.

What should you expect?

A typical treatment takes 60 minutes, and most patients find it very tolerable (it’s more of a tingling, numbing sensation). There is no downtime and you can return to work or your usual activities straightaway.

“Each patient responds differently to the treatment with regards to how high of a tolerance they have for discomfort. The treatment area will also impact the degree of discomfort, as well as the patient’s BMI,” says Dr Merten.

“No downtime is definitely one of the biggest perks. Patients are able to leave from their treatment and continue about their day – it’s an ideal lunchtime procedure for the right candidate.”

Results gradually occur in the following weeks and months after treatment, as the body naturally eliminates the destroyed fat through the lympathic system. Visible results can be seen from just one treatment, however normally a series of sessions will produce the most dramatic fat-busting results.

“The number of treatments will vary from patient to patient and from area to area. Usually 2-3 treatments will be required, but this will mostly be determined over time,” says Dr Merten.

The added bonus? If you take care to maintain your proper weight by eating right and exercising regularly, the results are permanent.
