Q&A on Liposculpture

Sydney cosmetic surgeon Dr Joseph Georghy says liposculpture can achieve outstanding results in body contouring. Here he answers some commonly asked questions about the procedure.

What is liposculpture?

Liposculpture is a surgical technique to remove unwanted fat deposits from specific areas of the body. Virtually any part of the body can be treated.

Who is an ideal candidate?

The best candidates for liposculpture are of normal weight with firm, elastic skin but who have pockets of excess fat.

What are the risks?

Liposculpture is normally safe, as long as patients are carefully selected, the operating facility is properly equipped, and the physician is adequately trained in liposculpture body contouring as well as in general surgery.

What results can be achieved?

Most patients are very satisfied with the results of their liposculpture surgery. They feel more comfortable in a wide variety of clothes and more at ease with their bodies. As long as a patient’s expectations are realistic, they should be happy with their new shape.

Is the result permanent?

Liposculpture is an excellent technique and remains a gold standard for creating a new body contour with very little scarring. The results can be permanent, provided the patient eats sensibly and exercises regularly.

What are your preferred methods?

Manual liposculpture is considered the gold standard in fat removal. I perform liposculpture to help patients rediscover the contours of their youth. The procedure is ideal for contouring areas of the body such as the breast, thighs, arms, ankles, knees and abdomen, as well as the more delicate face, chin and neck region. My preferred technique is the manual, or syringe, technique.

The results are excellent, however there is a steep learning curve and mastering this technique is much harder.

How is liposculpture performed?

I perform liposculpture under local anaesthesia, and the patient is conscious the whole time. Recovery time is minimal and all my patients are able to walk around immediately after the procedure. In my experience, results are consistent with minimal surgical risk involved.

Low level laser therapy is applied as soon as the procedure is completed. PhotoDynamic HelioTherm, a unique treatment and only available at North Shore Cosmetic, is performed to help improve skin contraction, minimise swelling and reduce the risk of scarring.

I believe this combination treatment helps the patient recovery quickly, delivers better cosmetic results and minimises any potential side effects.
