The CFDA Fashion Awards went off with a bang on Monday. Indeed, if the red carpet was anything to go by – with furs, knits, diamonds and gloves – the awards truly were a celebration of outstanding fashion achievements.

This year, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) awards were held at the Alice Tully Hall in the Lincoln Centre, New York. The event is run in collaboration with Swarovski, and recognises design excellence in womenswear, menswear and accessories as well as standout achievements in journalism, creative vision and lifestyle achievements.

Nominees for Womenswear Designer of The Year included Alexander Wang, Joseph Altuzarra and Marc Jacobs. For menswear, Thom Browne, Marcus Wainwright and David Neville (Rag & Bone) and Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne (Public School), were the top honourees.

Somewhat unsurprisingly, Rihanna took out the prestigious Fashion Icon award for 2014, which is presented to an individual who has made a significant impact on popular culture on the international stage.

Fittingly, the ‘icon’ rocked the red carpet with a see through dress of diamond mesh, complete with a fur wrap-around and stunning headpiece.
