4 things you might not know about Mother’s Day

1. Mother’s Day goes waaay back! According to ancient myths, it is suggested that Greeks and Romans celebrated Mother’s Day by honouring Goddess Cybele, personifying Great Mother Earth and Goddess of fertility, and Rhea, mother of the Gods.

2. The Mother’s Day we know and celebrate was started by Anna Jarvis in the early 1900s. Jarvis founded the Mother’s Day International Association, getting Congress to recognise the holiday. Jarvis was inspired by her own mother, who had called for “Mothers Work Days” to improve conditions for soldiers on both sides during the Civil War.

3. Less than a decade after she fought so hard to make it happen, Anna Jarvis ended up loathing the holiday she helped create. She spoke out strongly over the commercialisation of Mother’s Day, called for its demise and was arrested during one of her protests in 1948. Sheesh.

4. While many go straight for the bouquets with exotic blooms, the traditional gift is a single, simple carnation or chrysanthemum.
