While Kylie, Gigi and the gang have professional makeup artists at their beck and call, us mere mortals are left trolling Google to figure out why unicorn hair is now a thing.

From next level lip lining to out of this world contouring techniques, beauty in 2016 has been pretty damn challenging, and I think everyone can agree that we were all a bit confused at one stage or another (*insert the 100 layers challenge*). But, thanks to the goodness of Google, we always had someone to solve our makeup problems, no matter what they were.

So, without further adieu, we bring you the top 10 questions everyone wanted to know in 2016.

1. How do I do a fishtail braid?

This versatile hairstyle is good for always! Part your ponytail in two, then take a small section form your right pony and pull it up and over your right pony to join the left hand pony. Repeat this step on the opposite side and slide down the ponytail as you go.

2. How do I fill in my eyebrows?

This can go so wrong, or so right. If you use a pencil, the best way is to use short, sharp flicks and to not go too crazy. Going overboard can be a challenge – make sure you only fill in sparse hairs, otherwise your brows look unnatural and heavy. If you are using brow mascara or powder, simply follow the natural shape of the eyebrow and focus more on the arch rather than where your brow starts.

3. How do I shape my eyebrows?

Remember: it’s not a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Generally, you need to work out where your brow starts (in line with the side of your nose), arches (where your pupil is) and ends (the continuation of a line from your nose past the outer corner of your eye, to your brow).

4. How do I curl my hair?

Curling can be a pain in the arse if you don’t know what the heck you’re doing. But there are a few different ways you can create those killer VS catwalk curls and a HEAP of YouTube tutorials. Either use your straightener or a hair curling wand, separate your hair into sections and wrap it around the straighteners of curling wand, moving down the length of your hair.

5. How do I remove gel nails?

We all love the long-lasting effect of gel nails, but when it comes to removing them it seems none of us knew what was the go, because doing it wring can completely damage your nails. There are three ways to gently and safely remove gel nails in just a few minutes – soak, foil, or use a kit.

6. How do I apply concealer?

The old ‘V’ shape is the way to go when applying under eye concealer. It works a treat as it gives the best effect and provides the most coverage. Pat the concealer on in the shape of a ‘V’ or upside down triangle. Covering just the dark area will make it more noticeable whereas the triangle brightens up the whole area.

7. How do I get rid of bags under my eyes?

Seems like those early morning bags got the best of us. Colour correcting blew up the beauty world in 2016 doing everything from hiding redness to covering the dreaded dark circles. A pink cream corrector will help wake up your makeup and hide the fact you got next to no sleep #yourenotalone.

8. What is balayage?

The easiest answer is to hit up Instagram and check out Khloe Kardashian or Chrissy Teigen or pretty much any of the VS models. This colouring technique creates a natural transition from one hair shade to another (most commonly blonde balyage).

9. How do I make hair grow faster?

For the best results, this bad boy can be broken down into a multi step routine – including taking supplements, having regular trims and putting on hydrating masks, exfoliating and massaging your scalp, not overusing styling products, doing less colouring and loosening tight hair bands. Voila! Rapunzel!

10. How to clean makeup brushes?

Keep it clean! Dirty brushes can have all kinds of gross germs, dirt and bacteria (eek!). To clean your brushes, clean them with gentle soap or baby shampoo in lukewarm water, and then lie flat on a towel to dry.
