From London, Paris, New York and Milan, if you have been following the spring/summer ’17 runways you’ll know that the 80s are staging a serious comeback – and they look better than ever.

Big hair, bold makeup and bright colours are back in town, teamed with fresh, iridescent skin. But be warned, the trick is not to go straight back to the 80s style, but rather give it a fresh, modern twist. Check out our tips on how to nail this season’s trickiest beauty look.

Eyes

Say goodbye to the safety of browns and grey, because full throttle eye-shadow is in. We’re talking colourful eye makeup pulled out toward the temples in shades of purple, blue and green. But how do we splash a bit of a twenty first century feel into an 80s inspired look? Eyeliner. Once you add a pop of colour to your lid, add an angular swipe of eyeliner to keep the look modern and edgy.

Cheeks

For the cheeks, it’s all about building up the layers. Blush was all the rage in the 80’s, but rather than going with a shock of pink, opt for peachier tones and wrap it in a backwards C-shape along the orbital bone. Finish it off with a swatch of bronzer.

Lips

If you’ve gone for a bright 80s inspired eye, keep your lips neutral. This will keep your look modern and fresh. However if you want to go all out, a bold, well-defined lip is your best bets. A good option is to echo your eye shadow shade i.e. cool tones with cool tones, warm tones with warm tones.

Hair

The 80s hair has somehow also crept its way back onto the scene again (let’s be sure to ditch the scrunchies though!). Get a hint of 80’s flair by flipping your hair to one side and applying mousse through the part with a wide-tooth comb. If big hair just ain’t your thang, go sleek! A high shine finish paired with a deep side part is just the ticket if you’re looking for a hair update.

Brows

Keep your brows bold and well-defined. Fill in any sparse areas with a brow pencil or powder in order to frame your eyes and face.

Nails

Nails are going to see some hot 80s action too, going with the more-is-more mantra. Scintillating sparkle and talon-like tips ruled the runways, as well as bedazzled nail beds. The secret to pulling off loud, long nails? Make sure your shape is perfectly balanced. As a general rule the longest your free edge should be is one-third of the total nail.

Most of all, experiment and have fun!
