There are literally thousands of makeup myths floating around these days. There is no shortage or tips, tricks, do’s and don’ts of makeup application that may not have any validation behind them. We’ve taken it upon ourselves to bust these myths and help seperate beauty fact from fiction.

Myth

Foundation should be used to correct the colour and tone of your complexion.

Fact

Foundation can be a clever disguise for small imperfections and can create the illusion of a perfect complexion, but it should not be used to change the appearance of your skin colour as this will end up making your face look like a mask. Use bronzers, blushes and lip colour to colour correct instead.

Myth

Test your foundation to find the right colour by putting it on the back of the hand.

Fact

Your hand colour is never close to the colour of your face. Always check the colour of foundation on the area where you will be wearing it, so apply the product close to the jawline to see if it blends in with the rest of the skin on your face.

Myth

If a particular makeup style or colour is in fashion, you need to use it to be on-trend.

Fact

Just because it is in fashion does not mean that it suits you. Find your signature look that emphasises your positive features in a timeless way.

Myth

You should always set your makeup with powder.

Fact

If you have dry skin you should not use any powder, and even if you have shiny, oily skin avoid the under-eye area as the powder will cake in the lines and make them more pronounced. Just apply it to the centre of the face.

Myth

Once you know your colour season you’ll know exactly which makeup colours look best on you and which to avoid. Also certain hair colours can only wear particular colours of lipstick, blush and eyeshadow.

Fact

Every woman can wear all colours of lipstick, blush and eyeshadow. It is the depth of shade and the tone of colour which decrees how well it will look on someone. If the tone is a yellow tone or a pink tone it will make a difference. The tone of the colour should match your skin tone. Look for the right depth and tone and any colour will be flattering.

Myth

Makeup creates an illusion.

Fact

The best cosmetics are those that enhance the already beautiful aspects of a person’s face rather than creating a different person.

Myth

You must choose a concealer shade lighter than your foundation shade for the eye area.

Fact

The colour around your eyes is darker than your skin colour. By choosing a shade lighter than your foundation, you run the risk of the area becoming grey looking and not being covered properly. If you apply a deeper shade of concealer this will cover the area better as it has stronger pigments.

Myth

If you use good makeup you don’t need to use good skincare.

Fact

Hydrated skin is essential to give a natural-looking finish to all makeup products. If hydration is lacking makeup builds up, separates and it looks like you are wearing too much.
