Words like illuminators, highlighters and concealers are constantly thrown around in fashion and beauty magazines, but what is the secret to a truly glowing complexion? Beauty and lifestyle expert Romel Kouyan takes us through the absolute essentials in making your features “pop” in all the right places.

Concealers

We all have imperfections that need to be disguised, after applying your foundation, grab your concealer and start making those minor imperfections seamlessly disappear.

The trick with concealers is to find the consistency that best suits your skin. Once you have achieved this, choose a shade lighter than your skin tone and start applying under the eyes to conceal dark circles and anywhere you need a dab of coverage.

It is important you do not over do it with concealer; simply cover those areas that require detailed attention.

Illuminators

Let’s now talk illuminators. Think of this product for when you require a gorgeous glow at a moment’s notice. This by far, is one of the best-kept secrets for creating a radiant complexion.

Because skin illuminators can be used as contour creams, they are a perfect fit for anyone who needs a versatile skin booster. However, bear in mind this product must be used sparingly. Illuminators come in tiny packages, as they pack a powerful punch and should only be used in small amounts.

For most effective result, it is best to apply illuminator to areas where you want to create a subtle contrast. You can start by lightly outlining your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, the top of your shoulders and your décolletage then blending it ever so gently to create a wow effect.

Highlighters

Now that we have settled the difference between concealers and illuminators, lets spend a minute on highlighters.

Highlighter is a product that can completely transform your beauty look – so long as it’s used correctly. Choosing the right highlighter depends on your skin tone; for example, if you have pale skin, pink toned highlighters are going to stand out beautifully.

The goal when applying a highlighter is to achieve a reflective, dewy look, as if you’ve just moisturised your skin. You don’t want to be too shiny or glittery, so it’s best to test the product before you buy. When you’re at the store, apply a little highlighter to the back of your hand and blend well. If the product gives your skin a slight sheen, make the purchase, however if you’re covered in glitter or the colour looks sickly, try another product.

The three main areas you should apply a highlighter are: cheekbones and temples, the eyes, and the Cupid’s bow. I suggest applying your foundation with a foundation brush and use the same brush to apply your highlighter. The foundation remaining on your brush will help with the blending process.

When applying highlighter to your cheeks, blend it on the highest point of your cheekbone and up towards your temple. When applying it to your eyes, blend it underneath the eyebrow on the brow bone and into the inner crease. The lightness on the inner crease will open up your eyes, while the brow bone contouring will give you a brow-lift effect.
