Our skin was never intended to withstand some of the harsh treatments we put it under. Dr Spiller Biocosmetics looks to nature to promote healthy skin from the inside out.

For many years, anti-ageing skincare has been dominated by a tendency to force the skin into daily exfoliation using a variety of sometimes aggressive substances to keep the signs of premature ageing at bay. As with most things in life, there’s another side to the coin – one that is less attractive.

Damage control

Some experts are warning that long-term inflammatory responses can interfere with the natural processes of the skin and the potential destruction of collagen and elastin fibres. Formulators are now shifting their focus to cell renewal and natural rebuilding processes for the answer to younger, more radiant-looking skin.

However, it is widely accepted that some level of trauma has to be inflicted to trigger the skin’s own repair mechanism. Following this, the best course of action is to apply topical formulations that protect and support the skin during the recovery process, promoting rapid healing.

Back to nature

Dr. Spiller Biocosmetics adopts a biomimetic concept, which takes natural skincare to new levels of gentleness, effectiveness and results. It’s not just ‘natural ingredients mixed into a cream’ but a formulation that imitates the biological conditions found on young healthy skin. It works with the skin and encourages its own mechanism of cell renewal to protect existing cells from damage – making it an ideal post-treatment plan to get your skin fighting fit.

The term ‘biomimetic’ or ‘biomimicry’ refers to the transfer of biological methods found in nature to technical applications – in simple terms, to copy nature. Daily application of acid-containing skin products has been identified to be highly detrimental to the health of skin because it remains in a constant state of irritation and micro-inflammation. The Dr. Spiller Biocosmetics range is free of harsh acids and its trademarked Hydratain emulsion system further minimises the potential for irritation due to significantly lower levels of emulsifiers and preservatives.

Founder Dr Horst Spiller says that once the corrective ‘damage’ phase of a treatment is completed, the best option is to mimic the conditions found in the healthy acid mantle and then get out of the way to let nature do what it does best – repair skin.

Next to UV exposure, the factors known to cause skin ageing are inflammation, dehydration and oxidation. Dr. Spiller’s Hydratain emulsion system effectively counteracts inflammation because it works with the skin rather than breaking it down. Hydratain addresses issues of preventing dehydration and counteracting free radicals that cause cell damage, in a low-irritant formulation.

The structure and function of the skin are highly complicated – science has only recently discovered the tools to better understand its biological processes. Dr. Spiller Biocosmetics obtains the fine balance required in a skincare cream for a ‘biomimetic’ match.

My treatment

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the highly esteemed Dr. Spiller skincare expert Tracy Douglas at Face Plus Medispa in Sydney’s Bondi Junction.

Tracey performed a manual steam-activated enzymatic exfoliation with products from the Dr. Spiller sensitive range. After the exfoliation with peeling milk, next came a facial massage with Dr. Spiller topicals infused with hyaluronic acid using aloe vera as a medium.

My skin has been glowing ever since my treatment, and makeup glides on like a dream. Want to get you skin in optimum condition? I recommend Dr. Spiller!
